Overview of Training

Everyone at Seattle Walk Run has one thing in common; the desire to have fun while training. They are athletes of various capabilities. Some are just starting an exercise program, others are returning after a period of not training and some are Boston Marathon qualifiers.

But all wanted to get into better shape, make new friends and complete either a half or full marathon.
Our programs focus on two events every year. Our Winter Program, starting in January, focuses on the Seattle Rock n Roll event which takes place in late June. Our Summer Program, starting in June, focuses on the classic Seattle Marathon which takes place the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

However, Seattle Walk Run members train for a variety of different events. These include Chicago, Portland, Victoria, Bellingham and New York to name a few. Our training schedule can be modified to support each of these events. If you want to make new friends, get into the best shape of your life, and maybe even run that marathon you've always dreamed about, come out and join Seattle Fit. This is a non-intimidating environment, and we really do motivate people to get fit, and have fun.

A typical training week with Seattle Walk Run takes the following format:

  • Meeting on Saturdays at 7:30am at Bethany Community Church
  • A seminar on some aspect of training (hydration, shoes/gear, nutrition, injury prevention and other key areas of knowledge)
  • A training run or walk along pre-defined routes with a group of members whose training pace is similar to yours
  • Discussion with your coaches either before or after your training session on any areas of concern or interest
  • During the week you’ll have a schedule of training runs or walks to be completed  on your own, or with other members of your pace
Based on your pace and the distance you’re training for (Half v Full Marathon) you will be assigned to a Team.

Teams

Blue Team
The Blue Team is for runners with a pace of less than 10 minutes/mile. It includes both Half and Full Marathon training support. Currently there are a few members of this Team who will be running in the Boston Marathon 2011.

Green Team (Half)
The Green Team (Half) is for Half Marathon runners with a pace of 10+ minutes per mile. Historically this has been the largest group of runners in any program. It is often the first Team that a new member will join. We have been very successful in training these new members and supporting them in reaching their goal of running a Half Marathon.

Green Team (Full)
The Green Team (Full) is for Full Marathon runners with a pace of 10+ minutes per mile. Many of our Green Team (Full) members develop their abilities to the extent that they often move to the Blue Team and run a marathon with a pace of less than 10 minutes per mile.

Black Team (Walk to Run)
The Black Team will loosely follow the principals of the Jeff Galloway training, where they use frequent and consistent walk breaks to increase stamina and prevent injury.

White Team (Walkers)
Seattle Walk Run has a strong, viable walking program based on excellent coaching. For a variety of reasons, not everyone is a runner. So our program helps walkers train for the Half Marathon with less risk of injury and an improvement in speed and performance. There is nothing like receiving your medal for completing a Half Marathon.
